Golden Sunrise of Bromo

Set out before dawn to reach the peaks and sandy valleys of Mount Bromo in time for the sunrise. Off-road up to elevated vantage points in a jeep, opt to hike to the crater if you’d like, and enjoy a picnic breakfast before stopping to see the stunning Madakaripura Waterfalls on your return ride to Surabaya.

Get picked up in Surabaya around midnight and settle in for the 3-hour drive to the village of Cemara Lawang, catching some shut-eye en route or watching the darkened landscapes pass by. When you arrive, hop into a 4-wheel-dive jeep to take on the rugged slopes. Drive up to a sky-high vantage point 9,087 feet (2,770 m) above sea level and sip a hot cup of coffee as you wait for the sun to rise, looking out over Mount Bromo and the vast Sea of Sand beyond.

If you’d like, set off on foot for a 2.5-hour trek from Mount Pananjakan to the crater of Mount Bromo, or opt to reach the crater hole by jeep or even on horseback. When you arrive, refuel over a simple breakfast before beginning the ride back to Surabaya, stopping off on the way to visit the Madakaripura Waterfalls, where water cascades down the 656-foot (200-m) walls of a lush, cylindrical canyon.
